Architecture firm Warren and Mahoney has appointed former Woods Bagot global head of civic and events, Gavin Kain, as principal.

Kain has two decades of global experience, including having lead the $200m South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) masterplan.

According to Warren and Mahoney, Kain’s experience in working on large-scale projects will add weight to the firm’s multidisciplinary capabilities and provide a global focus to its 300-strong team across its locations in New Zealand and Australia.

Chairman of Warren and Mahoney, John Coop says, “Having worked in both countries, Gavin understands the nuances of doing business in both environments and will be able to actively support and reinforce this collaboration.”

Moreover, Kain’s elevation to principal at Warren and Mahoney will bolster the firm’s credentials in the areas of commercial, residential, defence, retail and cultural developments, and a strong interest in regionalism and sustainability.

Interviewed by Architecture & Design in 2011, Kain also acknowledged the growing role of technology and its potential for disruption for the industry.

“We are seeing a shift in people’s focus — moving from a new era of innovation and knowledge and hyper communication,” he was quoted as saying.
