The Australian Institute of Architects National President Ken Maher announced the winners of the 2016 International Chapter Architecture Awards recently at an event in London.

The Australian Institute of Architects’ International Chapter Architecture Awards program celebrates the contributions of Australian architects working on projects abroad. Seven awards and one commendation were chosen from a field of 16 entries across five categories.

According to Maher, Asia has been a significant growth area for Australian practices in recent years and the sheer variety of works emerging from the region is a testament to the talent and creativity of Australian architects in an increasingly international and competitive design arena.

The winners were selected by a jury comprising of Bob Nation (Chair), Michael Heenan, Kerstin Thompson, and Dr Ken Yeang.

The winners included the National Gallery Singapore by studioMilou Singapore with CPG Consultants, which won in the Public Architecture category and was praised by the jury for the ‘masterful interventions [which] allow the elegant and powerful original colonial spaces a new and sophisticated life whilst still preserving their historical character’.

The Australian Pavilion in Venice by Denton Corker Marshall, which debuted at last year’s Art Biennale and is host to Australia’s Exhibition, The Pool at the 15th International Architecture Biennale this year, also won in the Public Architecture category.

Projects that received an International Chapter Award will now vie for the Jørn Utzon Award for International Architecture at the National Architecture Awards to be announced in November.
