Acknowledging and encouraging excellence in building design, the 23rd Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) Building Design Award winners were announced last Saturday, 4 August 2018 at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Melbourne Design Studios (MDS) was the big winner on the night, winning the overall Building Design of the Year award for their 7 star NatHERS rated luxury townhouses in Richmond (No Two The Same), which also won the awards for best Multi Residential Design and Excellence in the use of Timber. The project also won two commendations: Residential Interior Design and Most Innovative Bathroom Design.

Located in an historic and tightly-held pocket of inner-city Melbourne, this townhouse development features six bespoke urban residences, along with the award-winning transformation of a derelict Victorian heritage dwelling also located on site.

The development balances a heritage setting with contemporary design, redefining typical urban townhouse design to hero connection with the landscape and surrounds.

Marking a departure from conventional townhouse typology, each dwelling offers multi-functional and spacious living in an otherwise tightly built-up urban area. Boasting a rare combination of light-filled internal spaces gathered around multiple outdoor spaces and rooftop terrace with city skyline views, each townhouse has over 20 percent more outdoor space than a typical solution.

The sustainable brief and inspiration for the project also provided the opportunity for innovative solutions and departures from the standard townhouse architecture. Designed in response to the Melbourne climate, each townhouse offers a holistic and contemporary approach to sustainable design and passive solar design principles.

Other winners include Beaumont Concepts’ prototype affordable sustainable house (CORE9), which received awards for Best Environmentally Sustainable DesignResidential and Best Energy Efficient Design.

Family-owned Ego Pharmaceuticals’ new energy efficient headquarters (Ego) won best Non-Residential Design – New Project, while Luke Fry’s transformation of one of St Kilda’s finest Art Deco homes (Chaddesley Avenue) won the award for best Residential Interior Design.

Little Brick Studio took out the popular People’s Choice Award for their affordable high-quality dual occupancy project in Mornington (Mitchell Street).

This year’s awards featured over 30 categories, from single dwelling and multi-residential projects, to interior design, commercial, education, hospitality, heritage conservation, and public buildings.

The awards typically place an emphasis on sustainability in building design, with categories including ‘Best Energy Efficient’, ‘Best Environmentally Sustainable’, and a new category: ‘Excellence in the use of Recycled Materials’.

According to BDAV president Lindsay Douglas, each year the Awards entries “go from strength to strength and provide not only the broader community with a window into the profession’s capabilities, but foster within BDAV members a sense of professional pride and a benchmark for best-practice projects.”
