BVN Architecture, Cox Architecture, Hassell and Populous have been shortlisted for the design of the $250-million North Queensland Stadium.

Located within the Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area, adjacent to the Townsville CBD, between Ross Creek and Saunders Street, the 25,000-seat stadium will become the new home for the North Queensland Cowboys NRL team.

Revealed by the Queensland Government, the four architecture firms were selected from a field of 17 international and national firms, and are now in the running to become principal consultants.

“The four companies have all demonstrated a proven track record in major sports stadiums,” said State Development Minister Anthony Lynham. “Most importantly, they have included more than 20 local companies collectively and local industry participation strategies as part of their submissions.”

The Queensland government has committed $140 million to support the development while the Federal Government has put forward $100 million through the Smart Cities Plan. The National Rugby League and the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have also pledged an upfront payment of $10 million.

The successful firm will be appointed by the end of this year. Construction is scheduled to start in mid-2017, with the project due to be completed in time for the start of the 2020 NRL season.
