A shortlist of five creative teams to lead Australia’s exhibition at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale has been released by the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) and it includes renowned architects and designers.

Chosen from twenty teams following a call for submissions in November 2014, the five teams will now wait until April to find out who will be announced the Creative Director for the Biennale. It will also be the first year a creative director is chosen to exhibit at the soon-to-be completed new pavilion by Denton Corker Marshall.

The creative teams:

  • POST: Australian Architecture Abroad – John de Manincor, Sandra Kaji-O’Grady and Misho Baranovic
  • Here and There – Ed Lippmann, John Pleffer and Susan Freeman
  • The Pool – Aileen Sage with Michelle Tabet
  • Parlour Live! – Justine Clark and Naomi Stead
  • Objects of Practice – Andrew Burns and Mark Gowing

Once chosen by the jury, the successful creative directors will then wait until the international theme for the Biennale is announced in late-2015 to adapt and finalise their exhibit themes.

The selection panel comprises:

  • Paul Berkemeier (chair, immediate past president of Australian Institute of Architects),
  • Janet Holmes à Court AC (Commissioner),
  • David Karotkin (national president of the Institute),
  • Ross Clark (chief operating officer of the Institute),
  • Rachel Neeson (Neeson Murcutt),
  • Ken Maher (executive chairman, Hassell),
  • Helen Lochhead (deputy Government Architect of NSW)
