Designers across a range of disciplines are collaborating more than ever. As new technologies continue to evolve, many designers have developed connections with manufacturing and fabrication specialists outside the design industry.

Presented by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Victoria Tasmania Branch, the Women in Design exhibition is an event that profiles female creative leaders from the disciplines of architecture, furniture design, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, textile design, visual art and inter-disciplinary design.

This includes celebrating the contribution that 14 Melbourne women have made to the built environment, such as McBride Charles Ryan’s principal, Debbie Ryan and Kerstin Thompson of Kirsten Thompson Architects.

Other contributors include Leah Heiss, Celina Clarke, Helen Kontouris, Helen Watts, Jenny Underwood, Kirsten Bauer, Michaela Webb, Penelope Lee, Leanne Zilka, Simone LeAmon, Sue Carr and Susan Hewitt. They will each delve into their catalogue of work to feature projects which tell the story of their careers.

Visitors will gain insight into the design and development process through the presentation of plans, renderings and photographs of built projects. Scale models will sit alongside textiles, homewares, furniture, lighting and videos of projects in development.

DIAlogue PM: Women in Design is a feature event of the exhibition, with industrial designer Celina Clarke, artist and designer Leah Heiss, architect Leanne Zilka, and academic and textile designer Jenny Underwood sharing about their partnerships and collaborations with experts across manufacturing, science and industry, and how this exchange stimulates their design process.

Women In Design is a Melbourne Now Satellite Event.
