Cox Architecture is collaborating with Australian start-up Melbourne Watch Company to design a wristwatch inspired by Melbourne.

Reflecting “the character and structure of Melbourne”, the wristwatch’s design is inspired by the shape of the oval and the forms of the grandstands at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The MCG’s redevelopment in 2006 was managed by a consortium of architects including Cox Architecture, Jackson Architecture, Tompkins Shaw and Evans Architects, HOK and Hassell.

Cox Architecture’s design collaboration brings to mind the series of watches commissioned by American company Projects Watches and designed by architects including Michael Graves, Richard Meier, Coop Himmelblau and Thom Mayne of Morphosis. Renowned architect Frank Gehry has also designed a watch for the Fossil brand.

Cox Architecture’s Melbourne-inspired watch is currently in development and is expected to be launched later this year.
