Q: Describe the product.

A:Scyon™ Secura™ interior flooring is a heavy-duty but lightweight structural flooring substrate that does a double duty — it can be easily used for tile, vinyl and carpet finishes over timber or steel joists in both residential general interiors and wet areas. Simple and fast to install, Secura™ interior flooring is the easiest way to get top protection against moisture damage on all interior floors.

Q: Where do you use it?

A: As a substrate for direct fixing of tiles, vinyl and carpet in residential floors and wet areas, as an alternative to particle board, plywood or compressed fibre cement. Unlike some timber products, tiles and vinyl can be directly fixed without the need for an underlay sheet. The strong no- squeak feel of Secura™ interior flooring gives a solid impression without the weight and cost of concrete.

Q: What sizes does it come in?

A: 2,700 mm x 600 mm x 19 mm.

Q: How does it make the builder’s life easier?

A: Secura™ interior flooring is 15 per cent lighter per sqm than conventional 15 mm compressed fibre cement, which makes it easier to handle.

And because it’s made from Scyon™, the advanced lightweight cement composite which can be gun nailed and is easy to cut like timber, there’s no need for pre-drilling and screwing. All told it can be up to 40 per cent faster to install than compressed.

To add to this, the 19 mm tongue and groove joining means it is compatible with other 19 mm flooring products and eliminates the need for timber trimmers along the tongue and groove joint.

Q: Why is it the easiest way to get top protection against moisture damage in all interior floors?

A: Secura™ interior flooring is resistant to damage from moisture. The moisture-resistant sealer on all sides, combined with the moisture- resistant properties of the Scyon™ material, removes the need for full floor waterproofing outside enclosed shower areas. To add to this, if rain holds you up during construction and the roof’s not yet on, the product won’t need replacing or sanding because it’s warped and twisted, like some timber products1. This resistance to moisture damage also means that if there is a waterproofing failure some time in the future, then the Secura™ interior flooring will continue to perform, even if it gets wet.

1Exposure to the elements should not be longer than three months.

Q: What is the product made of?

A: Scyon™ Secura™ interior flooring is made from 19 mm thick Scyon™, the advanced lightweight cement composite with heavy-duty performance. It’s the brainchild of James Hardie's research and development team, created with ease of installation in mind. Scyon™ brings advanced building technology to the houses of today, with an eye on tomorrow.

Q: Is the product environmentally friendly? If so, how?

A: Scyon™ Secura™ interior flooring is:

• made from benign raw materials low in toxicity

• low in embodied energy relative to many other building products like masonry and concrete — that’s the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of the product

• easy to incorporate into practical building systems that touch the earth lightly

• very durable and low maintenance, which helps create buildings low in lifetime energy consumption

• able to be used to create energy efficient and thermally comfortable buildings in any Australian climate (when used in the right design)

• low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Q: What’s been the feedback on the product?

A: Builder Mat Croyston from Chevron Projects Pty Ltd installed Secura™ interior flooring on the upper-storey of a home in Woollahra (Sydney’s eastern suburbs). “We wanted a solid feel underfoot, with no creaking and little movement in the floor,” he says. “Originally we looked at the options of either two layers of plywood or HardiPanel® compressed sheet.”

When Croyston discovered Secura™ interior flooring, he found he had the peace of mind of compressed, without the backache. Croyston’s team appreciated the lightweight nature of the product as installing heavy flooring on the first floor of any home is a struggle. Summing up, Croyston says: “Secura™ interior flooring is the most easily installed heavy-duty, moisture resistant, lightweight flooring I have used.”
