The Australasian Industrial Ecology Conference will be held at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney July 30 to 31.

The aim of the conference is to showcase and promote internationally leading examples of initiatives that pioneer the optimisation of material and energy flows within industry and embody the ultimate industrial ecology goal of 'zero waste'.

Industrial Ecology promotes enhanced sustainability by stimulating innovations in the reuse of waste materials. The wastes or by-products of one industry are used as inputs in another industry, thereby closing the material loop of industrial systems and minimizing waste.

The Australasian Industrial Ecology Conference is the result of collaboration between industry, government agencies, and academia. The conference aims to investigate a broad range of applications which aim to reduce and even eliminate by-products resulting from the manufacturing process, and to share practical experiences within industry and academic research.

Sessions will include:

- Manufacture of alternative raw materials for cement production and construction

- Resource recovery from the steelmaking sector

- Use of by-products in the building materials sector

- Reuse of aluminium industry by-products in the steelmaking industry
