A house described as a “highly unusual building that is as much a sculpture as habitation” has come out on top at the 2017 Bayside Built Environment Awards.

March Studio’s design for 24 Victoria St, Brighton received the Best of the Best prize at the annual awards gala, which recognises innovation and architectural quality across the built environment of Melbourne’s Bayside region.

Key design features of the Victoria St dwelling include a ground floor that has been sunken a metre into the earth, a nine-metre ramp of native grasses at street level, and a dynamic copper screen.

"Few new buildings provide intrigue and invoke query in the way that this building does and it does it with skill craftmanship and confidence," the judges noted.

The March Studio-designed house also took out the Most Creative Design and the Best New Building Design categories.
