Baker Kavanagh Architects (BKA) took home the People’s Choice title at the Randwick City Council Architecture and Urban Design Awards for their work at Emanuel School, Randwick.

Located on grounds of heritage significance in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Emanuel School commissioned BKA to design its new Science, Technology and Library building. BKA worked in conjunction with the NSW State Heritage Office to ensure the design respected the school’s significant heritage surroundings, using green design principles to minimise running costs and inform students about sustainable concepts.

The school was one of 11 projects to receive an award at the event, held at the Prince Henry Centre, Little Bay on 31 July .

Rolf Ockert Design was the winner of the program’s New House category prize for their Clovelly House project while Madeleine Blanchfield Architects’ Powell Street Residence took out the Alterations & Additions category and rounded out the residential prizes for this year.

The Multi-Unit Housing and Mixed Use Buildings, Heritage Conservation & Adaptive Re-use and the Landscape & Urban Projects categories were more difficult to split for the judges who awarded commendations as well as winners in those fields of design.

Notable faces included Bates Smart, Aspect Studios and MHN Design Union which all received awards for various projects completed in the Randwick City region.
