Australian hotel designs pit against Asia’s best

    Nathan Johnson

Three Australian projects have been listed as finalists for the 2015 Asian Hotel Design Awards in a field that showcases the best in new hotel designs, from bathrooms to lobby bars, and bedrooms to event spaces.

Sydney’s 1888 Hotel by Shed Architects is the sole Australian project to be listed within the two architecture categories and will take on projects from Thailand, Taiwan and Singapore for the ‘Architecture –Historical Building’ award. (Below images: Kata Bayer)

Dreamtime Australia Design (DAD) will represent Australia in two categories and has projects in both the ‘Interior Design – Café Bar or All Day Dining’ and the ‘Interior Design—Bar categories’.

The interior design of ‘Grain’ bar at Four Seasons in Sydney will be up against one Hong Kong and three Singapore bars,  with DAD hoping their timber dominated fitout will get them over the line in that category.

Also at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel is DAD’s other finalist project—‘The Woods’ café and bar.  The Woods again demonstrates the firm’s affinity with timber and has earned them a space alongside two Chinese, one Korean and one Thai project in the Café Bar or All Day Dining category.

Awards Director Matt Turner said the finalists were of high calibre and reflective of Asia’s status as the world’s fastest growing region for hotel design.

“We are delighted that the entries into the inaugural Asia Hotel Design Awards were the highest calibre of quality and creativity,” he said.

“The competition was very close and the finalists can be proud to have been voted as the best in their category.

“Asia is the world’s fastest growing region for new hotel design and development, with Singapore at its hub, and we are excited to recognise the diversity and talent of the designers and architects raising the bar for imagination and excellence in this rapidly changing region.”

Design Awards ceremony will take place on 12 March, 2015 at the Parkroyal on Pickering in Singapore. The event is part of Singapore Design Week and will run alongside Hospitality 360° – a new exhibition for the hotel sector.
