German architecture studio, Modulorbeat has created a temporary sauna sanctuary as part of the art festival Das Detroit-Project in Bochum.

Precast concrete frames, originally used for building shaft mines, have been stacked on top of one another to form the three levels of the 7.5 metre tower.

Designed for one person, a small sauna is housed on the middle level of the structure, with a plunge pool below it and relaxation space above offering views of the abandoned factory site on which it is located.

Vertical ladders link the three levels together and provide an initial entry point to the sauna.

The installation project is the result of Modulorbeat’s research ‘Boderlands’, which investigated the interconnection between Bochram's city centre and outside areas.
