A massive water management infrastructure project, a transformed abandoned railway and a Canberra pedestrian underpass were all celebrated at the 2016 Australian Urban Design Awards (AUDA), held recently in Melbourne.

A total of 12 urban design projects were recognised at the program’s presentation ceremony on 13 October, including a number of recognisable adaptive reuse and repurpose projects.

The 2016 Sustainability Awards-winning Sydney Park Water Re-Use Project by Turf Design Studio and Environmental Partnership continued its winning streak of awards success by taking the AUDA’s top prize for Delivered Outcome - Large Scale. As well as winning the Outdoor Structure category at the 2016 Sustainability Awards, the project also recently received a Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Design Award as well as another at the 2015 Sydney Design Awards.

Aspects Studios’ conversion of disused Sydney CBD rail line, The Goods Line into a pedestrian walkway and public park was another recognisable project to receive an accolade, taking a Delivered Outcome – Small Scale award alongside the Bowen Place Crossing in Canberra by Lahznimmo Architects and Spackman Mossop Michaels Landscape Architects. Both The Goods Line and Bowen Place Crossing have also enjoyed multiple successes at awards programs in the past year, Bowen Place most recently taking the urban design category prize at the ACT Architecture Awards.

Patrons of the AUDA, Malcolm Turnbull MP and Lucy Turnbull AO congratulated the finalists saying “these projects and designs will enhance our cities’ built environments for the people they must serve, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Six awards and six commendations were handed out by the jury in 2016.
