2013 Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Toyo Ito will be one of the featured designers at an exhibition exploring Japanese architecture to be held in Sydney from 2 April to 1 May.

The exhibit titled Parallel Nippon has been organised by The Japan Foundation and the Architectural Institute of Japan and along with featuring work from Kengo Kuma, Tadao Ando, Kenzo Tange, SANAA, and many more there will be panel discussions featuring leading Australian and Japanese Architects.

Sydney architect Andrew Burns leads fellow practitioners Koichi Takada, Peter Stutchbury and Yoshihito Kashiwagi in an informal panel discussion on Saturday 13 April at 2pm, exploring selected works from Parallel Nippon and finding connections between these projects and their own work. ABOUT ANDREW BURNS:

Andrew Burns is principal of Andrew Burns Architect, the practice he founded in Sydney in 2008. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science (Architecture) and in 2003 with a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours Class 1). In 2012 Burns received the inaugural Fugitive Structures commission at Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation and designed the winning entry in The Architecture Foundation’s invited competition to transform Gibbon’s Rent into a public garden. In 2011 he won the international design competition for Australia House, a gallery and atelier that forms part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial in Japan, selected by a jury chaired by Tadao. ABOUT KOICHI TAKADA:

Koichi Takada has brought a Japanese sensibility to Australian architecture. His innovative and refined work melds the traditions of his homeland with today’s stunning flowing forms. Koichi graduated from the School of Architecture at the City University of New York and the Architectural Association, London. Based in Sydney, Koichi has been associate director at PTW Architects and worked on award-winning luxury apartments in Sydney, as well as a range of architectural projects in Japan, China and the Middle East. In 2008, Koichi established Koichi Takada Architects in Sydney, and is working on a number of exciting projects and proposals in Australia and overseas. Koichi has won key international awards in Australia and Japan, has taught at tertiary institutions including UTS and RMIT, and has published architectural articles in Australia & Japan. www.koichitakada.com/

ABOUT PETER STUTCHBURY:

Sydney based architect Peter Stutchbury graduated from Newcastle University in 1978 where he is now a Professor receiving the universities convocation medal in 2004. He held professional chairs in South Africa, USA and South America, awarded the Luis Barragan Diploma Catedra in 2008 and the Diploma de Architecture Chile 2010 & Diploma de Department of Landscape Architecture Taiwan 2011. Peter is a founder and teacher of in the Glenn Murcutt International Master class since 2001. In 2008 his firm won the International Living Steel Award in Russia (over 1200 submissions) and since 1995 Peter Stutchbury Architecture has won 46 AIA (14 Nationally) including both of the nation’s major awards in 2003 & 2005. ABOUT YOSHIHITO KASHIWAGI:

Born in Osaka and educated at Tokyo’s Keio University, Yoshihito Kashiwagi first earned a degree in business administration before going on to study architecture and urban design. He trained at the Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genoa, Italy, and as worked at Engelene Moore in Sydney before establishing Facet Studio in Sydney (2009) and Osaka (2010). A registered architect in both Australia and Japan, Yoshihito won the commercial category Intergrain Timber Vision Award in 2010 and the retail category Interior Design Excellence Award in 2011. He has teaching positions at The University of Sydney and UNSW, and has also lectured in several universities across Japan. www.facetstudio.com.au Yoshihito is listed in the Japan Art Directory in Australia
