Glued laminated timber elements by Rubner Holzbau were used to build a 110-metre spacious walkway designed to connect the Chadstone Shopping Centre to the new office tower ‘Tower 1’ and the MGallery of the Sofitel-Hotel Group.

Completed in 2019, the Chadstone Link is a stylish and weather-protected walkway at Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre, one of the largest shopping complexes in the southern hemisphere.

Designed by MAKE Architects for the client, Hickory Group, the arched walkway features 31 differently dimensioned and individually formed timber arches made of glued laminated timber (glulam or GLT) by Rubner Holzbau and harmonically connected to the arched glass roof of the adjoining building complex. At their highest point, the timber arches reach a height of 15 metres.

A highly translucent PTFE fabric positioned on top of the glued laminated timber structure floods the interior of the walkway with generous amounts of natural light.

Rubner’s scope of work for the Chadstone Link project encompassed detailed design, structural engineering, fabrication and delivery to site.
