Television star Oprah Winfrey had some unlikely guests happily wriggling in their own waste on her television show earlier this year when she featured an ecologically friendly worm farm made by Australian plastic design innovator and manufacturer, Reln .

Reln’s Can-O-Worms home composter was seen by millions worldwide, including Australia, when it was shown by Sophie Uliano, an environmentalist, who has developed an earth-friendly lifestyle that appeals to women who do not want to compromise their beauty and style.

Sophie Uliano - the New York Times’ Best Selling author of the new book, Gorgeously Green – presented the composting system from environmentally aware Reln as an example of how families could harness the power of nature’s own recyclers, worms, to dispose of household trash while amusing curious kids.

Reln’s Can-O-Worms home composter comprises a base and three working trays made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. The Can-O-Worms home composter converts food waste into nutrient-rich, 100% organic fertiliser loved by potted plants, gardens and vegetables.

“The Can-O-Worms shown on Oprah impressed audiences worldwide as user-friendly, easy to operate and fun for all ages. It is so versatile that it can be left on a balcony or in a laundry for apartment dwellers, or in a shed or in a shaded outdoor location for those with a yard,” says Reln.

Reln’s Can-O-Worms consists of four trays. The bottom tray is a Collector Tray, which has a solid base and tap. Liquid drains through the upper trays into the Collector Tray where it can be tapped and used as a liquid fertiliser.

The worms are started off in the first of three Working Trays by means of the Bedding Block provided with the kit. They then simply ‘eat their way up’, wriggling into the Working Tray above when they can detect food scraps placed there.

By the time the top Working Tray is full, most worms have left the original Working Tray where they began which had the bedding block. Users can now take out this tray, remove the castings and then return it to the top again.

“Thus the cycle is never ending, and you will always have a convenient, natural and efficient way to dispose of your food waste, while at the same time ensuring a constant supply of your very own top quality fertilizer,” says Reln.

“For keen fisherfolk, the unit will breed up to 20,000 bait worms, which are easily removed from the top! Most important of all, you will contribute to the reduction of garbage at your local municipal land fill, by reducing the amount of waste you now throw away”. The unit’s patented concept was awarded an Australian Design Award.
