Materiality was identified as an important element during the concept phase of Top Ryde City, a high density residential development in Sydney's inner west.

Located in Ryde, NSW, Top Ryde City, designed by Robertson & Marks Architects for Crown Group was conceived with a strong community identity built around a lush resort concept. Early on in the design process, the selection of materials was identified as critical to the success of the concept. The materials for the facade cladding were tactile, had human scale, and reinforced the relationship of the building with the resort landscape elements.

Built on top of an existing regional shopping centre, the development was part of a tall mixed use building, which meant the materials needed to meet stringent fire requirements.

Prodema cladding panels and Alpolic fire resistant aluminium composite panels met the brief for materials. Prodema offered a palette of colours and natural patina to reinforce the resort landscape theme. Alpolic/FR with its extensive colour options and sleek finish acted as a foil for the natural Prodema product. Together they maintained a pattern of crisp clean lines and colour, creating a connection between the facade materials and the lush garden resort courtyard.

“Durability and simple erection methods completed satisfaction of the selection criteria and allowed flexibility in its use and application throughout the project," Brian Mann, Robertson + Marks said.

Completed in 2014, Top Ryde City by the Crown Group has been the recipient of a number of prestigious industry awards including 2013 Master Builders Australia NSW Excellence in Housing Awards; Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW President’s Award; and UDIA NSW Awards of Excellence 2013 Best High-Density Development in NSW and ACT.

"This award recognises the development's good use of space and forward thinking approach," said Iwan Sunito – CEO of Crown Group.
