Gibbon Group created custom fit-for-purpose tretford rugs for the relocated Clemenger office in Sydney.

Located in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct within the historic Pier 8/9 at Millers Point, the Bates Smart-designed office sought to initiate an engaging dialogue between the energised creativity synonymous with the Clemenger brand and the rich heritage of the historic pier.

Having recognised the process and workflow of the organisation, Bates Smart wanted to project the strong brand culture and identity of the Clemenger Group in the interior design. The design team looked to achieve this by providing a ‘blank canvas’ on which a creative overlay would be allowed.

The idea was to have a muted palette that neutralised the space and invited people to fully inhabit and own the space around them. Overscaled blocks, representing the historic pier, were composed into a series of interlocking sculptural pieces to form stairs, joinery and furniture items.

Gibbon Group was engaged to create custom fit-for-purpose tretford rugs made to exacting scale and specifications. Tretford carpet’s natural pile combined with its innate corded structure offered the right balance of comfort and harmony.

Bates Smart designers chose a palette of tretford Charcoal and Double Cream for their striking design, which was created using a repeatable pattern that combined hundreds of geometric shaped carpet pieces, accurately cut by hand and assembled together to stunning effect.

The dynamic outcome of the interior fitout invites open interactions between Clemenger staff and their clients, achieving the desired creative objectives.

This Bates Smart design of the Clemenger Group Sydney office has been shortlisted for Workplace Design in the Australian Interior Design Awards.
