A special Dulux Protective Coatings colour was formulated for the giant sculptural column towering over the CityLink toll road in Melbourne to meet the brief of the client, Transurban.
A familiar sight for all Victorian motorists and visitors, the iconic cheese stick is painted in its very own Dulux Protective Coatings colour, formulated to deliver brightness, opacity and durability to the structure.
Named 'True Yellow', Dulux Weathermax HBR is a 2 pack polyurethane coating, with the colour and product combination perfected over several months. Since there were several constraints to the challenging application, the solution demanded just one coat of primer and one top coat.
Dulux PC’s Victorian sales manager Steve Kraljevic managed the project and personally supervised the overnight painting crew from Mattioli.
"Work could also only be completed between the hours of 10 pm and 4 am. However, it was required that one lane of traffic had to get through going both ways. Heights and climate were also at play," Kraljevic explained.
"To manage these constraints, we were asked to create a solution requiring only one coat of primer and one top coat."
Dulux PC specification consultant and senior business development executive Daniel Mckeown and David Marzouk from the technology team delivered the carefully tested system, with the three-week application performed in the dead of night by a 25-strong painting crew supported by traffic management staff.
Epoxy primer Durebild STE was applied at 80 microns followed by the Weathermax HBR 'True Yellow' top coat at 100 microns in a gloss finish.
Dulux Protective Coatings had previously partnered with Transurban on a major asset on the same stretch of the freeway – the red sticks still look impressive eight years after application.
Dulux Protective Coatings has once again delivered a high quality solution for the complex project.
