The requirement to measure, mitigate and report embodied carbon is now extensively embedded in planning and regulatory contexts.  The architectural and design community have been slow in embracing the use of “measurement” of embodied carbon to evidence the carbon benefit of their “low carbon” design strategies.

The most recent report from the IPCC shows that we will surpass the 1.5°C Paris target five years early and are on track for a 3°C world. The design community are absolutely at the forefront of stopping this catastrophic scenario.

More than 40% embodied carbon mitigation can be captured if architects and designers embrace embodied carbon analysis at the early stage of design.  If you start embodied carbon analysis at design development, then you are too late to make a difference. Mandatory embodied carbon compliance for design is here, this is an opportunity to get this skill today.

In this session – we will take participants through the steps necessary to benchmark early stage design, and quantify the mitigation achieved through key design and adaptive strategies.

Speakers

Dr Caroline Noller CEO & Founder, The Footprint Company

Dr Caroline Noller is internationally recognised for her contribution to the development of property whole of lifecycle carbon assessment, green building standards, and sustainable design.

She founded The Footprint Company (TFC) with the vision of delivering low carbon design leadership globally – via cloud-based software systems which she created during doctoral studies at UNSW. The Footprint Calculator (TM) carbon measurement software system is one of 4 recognised globally. In its 10-year history, TFC has supported the mitigation of over 61,000,000 TCO2-e from development and construction globally.

Dr Noller has driven world class sustainability outcomes for asset owners including Lendlease, The GPT Group, Frazers, and CapitaLand. Her achievements include Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) world leadership listing for GPT (2 years running) and CapitaLand; Banksia Awards for Large Company (GPT) and People’s Choice (Rouse Hill); and the Victorian Premier’s Award for Sustainability.

Her career has been defined by innovative leadership and her design and development input can be seen in award-winning developments including Rouse Hill Town Centre, Barangaroo South, Highpoint Shopping Centre, Victoria Harbour, Deutsche Bank Place (Sydney), and the recently completed ANU Kambri mixed-use precinct – all of which she leads in Sustainability and evidence-based carbon benchmarking and measurement. Dr Noller is an active member of a range of industry groups.

Dr Noller has also secured over A$5m in government clean energy and property related sustainability innovation grants across a range of projects including the Charlestown Square Solar Thermal Cooling Plant which was the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.
