A louvre roof system from Vergola (NSW) was recently chosen in a major Eco-Challenge to promote sustainable living.

Conducted by Australian Living Pty Ltd in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, The Eco-Challenge encouraged a group of homeowners to design the most sustainable house possible within a budget.

The Eco sub-division comprises four sustainable freestanding dwellings and is located on a former school site in Strickland St in Rose Bay.

Australian Living director Cameron Rosen project managed the building of the homes using the latest sustainable practices and products.

When designing and building a sustainable dwelling Rosen says it is important to choose the right materials to achieve “thermal comfort and energy efficiency.” Australian Living only selects materials that meet stringent sustainability criteria.

“Elements such as insulation, the type and amount of glass, shading, orientation of the homes, passive ventilation and the use of recycled grey water have all been carefully considered to maximise energy efficiency,” says Rosen.

Vergola louvre roofing systems are distributed exclusively by Vergola (NSW), and one of these roofing systems was selected as it offers environmental benefits.

The unique dual skin aerofoil shape of Vergola louvres provides effective insulation from heat, resulting in the protected area below being much cooler. Vergola is constructed from Colorbond steel, providing strength and durability.

The Vergola louvre roof system is popular among designers and architects in both residential and commercial applications.

Cameron Rosen’s house was the first of the four sustainable homes to be officially opened. More than 300 invited guests and visitors attended the opening of the “eight-star” house on Sustainable House Day on September 12.

Mr Rosen says the Vergola was the ideal choice to control ventilation, natural light and provide insulation from heat.

“The design of my home means that you don’t need an air conditioning system,” says Rosen.

The Vergola not only adds value to a home, it also helps to reduce energy bills.
