SUPAWOOD’s SUPATILE 10 acoustic timber ceiling tiles have provided a sensitive and attractive solution to address noise reverberation and accessibility in the modernisation of circa 1920’s heritage listed buildings at Wesley College in South Perth.

The brief given to Taylor Robinson Architects put significant emphasis on sustainability and respect for the heritage nature of the existing buildings. The aim was to sensitively refurbish both the Ward and Kefford buildings to provide flexible contemporary learning and administration spaces for the senior school.

High ceilings, tiled floors, exposed brickwork and large windows which accentuated noise reverberation necessitated the need for a ceiling tile product to dampen the echo. SUPATILE 10 provided the designers with flexible economic acoustic options as well as full access into the ceiling and a look that maintained a blend between the old and new elements.

Careful use of old and new materials has created a lively collaborative learning environment of flexible teaching areas which flow into breakout spaces. The choice of SUPATILE 10 ceiling tiles provided the designers a range of options and finishes that let them choose something to meet the budget while addressing the client’s precise brief. By selecting a ceiling tile system, installation is quick and simple, and access to services in the ceiling easily maintained.

A maintenance free SUPAFINISH Tasmanian Oak concept timber veneer brings warmth to the interior and blends perfectly with both the heritage features as well as the newer textures. The use of a slotted acoustic pattern with integrated lighting adds a contemporary touch. A clean edge appearance to the slots has been achieved by using SUPAWOOD’s V-Slot option.

In 2015, this project received a Commendation in Heritage by the WA Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects in recognition for faithfully complementing and maintaining the character of the heritage architecture while successfully transforming the buildings into a contemporary educational facility.
