The Projex Group Top 20 favourite green rooftops series continues with the Brandeis University Rooftop Farm in Massachusetts, USA.

A green initiative led by volunteer students from the University, the rooftop garden began on a modest note with 850 milk crates filled with soil, seedlings, and a bit of water on the rooftop terrace between the science buildings. This has grown into the Brandeis Rooftop Farm, a carefully cultivated crop garden with perfectly placed rows, enriching the atmosphere with rich oxygen while also providing food for lunch.

The Brandeis Rooftop Farm grows local veggies such as broccoli, kale, arugula, and spinach to sell at the Brandeis Farmers’ Market and donate to local food pantries and shelters.

The Brandeis Rooftop Farm is designed to not only create discussion about design space and nature, but also to make use of an underutilised space in the university while creating an environment where people can connect, learn and work together.
