Hunter Douglas Architectural supplied a bespoke solution for a challenging exterior shading requirement at the prestigious Barangaroo urban renewal project in Sydney.

Embodying world-class design excellence and sustainability, Barangaroo is located along the iconic Sydney Harbour, making it one of the world’s leading waterfront commercial developments. However, the harbour location presented its own unique set of challenges when it came to exterior shading. The shading solution had to provide sufficient protection from wind and rain due to the waterfront location, while maintaining the magnificent views over the harbour.

Developer Lend Lease partnered with commercial specifier, Turner Brothers to put these specific requirements out to tender. Hunter Douglas Architectural’s bespoke solution from its Alpha Awning Series was selected for the application.

Designed to offer maximum flexibility for end-user operation, the Alpha Cable Guide Awning is a great contemporary straight drop option made from high tensile 316 marine grade stainless steel cables and mounting brackets to withstand coastal applications.

The clear PVC fabric allowed an aesthetically pleasing solution that was still practical and provided unrestricted views over the harbour. Horizontal joins rather than the standard vertical joins were provided for the PVC fabric to give it a much flatter appearance and reduce the roll up diameter of the tube. The joins also lined up with the hand rails and were not in direct sight to ensure a seamless exterior appearance.

Hunter Douglas Architectural supplied a total number of 57 Alpha Cable Guide Awnings with clear PVC fabric to the Barangaroo waterfront project, ensuring that future residents and occupants will never have to compromise on the stunning views of Sydney Harbour, regardless of rain, wind or shine.
