Furphy Foundry manufactured and supplied the shelter, picnic setting and litter receptacles for the Glenrowan rest area on the Hume Highway, one of Australia's major inter-city highways running 807 kilometres between Melbourne and Sydney.

A vital link for transporting goods to and from the two cities, the Hume Highway also serves the Albury-Wodonga and Canberra regions. Given the length of the journey, several rest areas have been provided on this road for travellers to pull over, eat, recharge and appreciate the numerous towns along the way. Glenrowan, a small town in Wangaratta, is one of the more popular rest points along the Hume mainly because of the Ned Kelly siege sites.

The design elements of steel that were used in Furphy’s shelter, picnic setting and litter bins linked directly with the famous Ned Kelly.

Shelter

The Furphy Provincial Shelter supplied for this application features a classic skillion roof design with steel front screen rafters to provide excellent shade from the sun's daily path while controlling the water flow during rainy seasons. The custom designed shelter is entirely constructed from hot dipped galvanised steel, avoiding any damage from continuous exposure to the sun, rain and road pollution. Hot dipped galvanised materials have a high level of corrosion resistance and require minimal maintenance.

Picnic Setting

Furphy supplied the Steel Slatted Council picnic setting to match the all-steel shelter. Featuring cast aluminium ends and hot dipped galvanised mild steel slats, the picnic setting has a versatile and robust design that complements Glenrowan's environment. The standard length of 2000mm easily accommodates a large group of travellers while wheelchair access has been provided on both ends for people with access disabilities.

Litter Receptacles

Furphy also supplied the customised Avenue Litter Receptacles to complete the rest area furniture and keep the area clean and usable for all travellers. Two 240-litre bin enclosures have been joined together to collect litter and paper or plastic waste. Key features include galvanised steel construction; pyramid top lid keeping rainwater out of the bin; and unique lockable door entry with a 7mm triangle lock preventing any other key from opening the receptacle.

Furphy Foundry can modify any of their standard products in terms of colour, materials and features to fit specific project requirements.
