The Artisan is designed with the future in mind, a sustainable medium density exemplar built for longevity - a home for life and many generations to come.

Designed to provide spacious, light-filled homes for its inhabitants, the Artisan is a serious alternative to urban sprawl. A skewed plan provides every apartment with north facing living and generous private balconies.

Judicious sloping of walls and roof allowed an additional two apartments without compromising on ceiling heights and maintaining amenity to neighbours. Consolidation of landscape zones provided lush planting buffers to the street and merges the boundary with its parkland neighbours.

Within this robust and sustainable building, elevated streets allow the opportunity for neighbourly interactions and its palette and detailing references the historic context without resorting to imitation.

100 per cent of rainfall to roof is collected in a 20,000 litre basement tank for re-use.

The project was driven by a commitment on the part of EME Design to propose a better, more sustainable model for increased densification, and by the client to deliver exemplary design and sustainability outcomes in order to foster long-term occupancy and build a neighbourly community within the building.

KEY INITIATIVES

  • Inspired by its context, the genesis of the skewed floor plan is the result of rigorous solar analysis
  • Conceived in 2008, the exceptional energy ratings of 8.0 to 9.1 stars, reveals a building ahead of its time
  • The Artisan is sculpted by light and air to provide every apartment with cross-ventilation and north facing living
  • Optimising the clients desire for solid construction, the high thermal mass construction enveloped in a high performance rendered foam insulation, allowing year round comfort in the extremes
  • In lieu of inefficient walls of glass views have been carefully framed (and shaded) to achieve optimal thermal performance
  • Every apartment has orientation of primary living areas, balconies and windows to north
  • Balconies sized to provide outdoor dining and space for balcony garden (all with northern aspect)
  • High R value external insulation envelope encapsulating mass concrete structure Internalised thermal mass with seasonal solar control passive design
  • Strategic placement of windows to optimise winter solar gain
  • Strategic layout of apartments and private open space to compliment solar strategy
  • Sun shading to appropriate windows on northern elevations
  • Strategic reduction of glazing to eastern and western aspects
  • Analysis of shadows cast by existing buildings and landscape to optimise summer shading requirements to east and west
  • Public spaces are naturally ventilated undercrofts providing genuine cross ventilation to all apartments
  • Generous landscape zones for communal productive gardens Insulation to suspended slabs to ensure maximum potential for thermal mass to perform its magic
  • LED lighting to all apartments
  • Ceiling fans to apartments for low energy cooling
  • Rinnai Demand Duo 6 star Instantaneous Gas hot water system
  • High Efficiency Mitsubishi SR Series Inverter reverse cycle heating & back up cooling
  • Sensor activated LED / fluorescent lighting to all public spaces including landscaping
  • 100 per cent of rainfall to roof is collected in a 20,000 litre basement tank for re-use
