USA's top 17 residences revealed at 2015 American Architecture Awards

The nation’s best in building design for 2015 have been recognised by the National Association of Building Designers (NABD) at the annual National Building Design Awards, held 17 October.

More than 25 projects across Australia were awarded for showcasing expertise, creativity and excellence in building design, but it was a renovation of a 12 hectolitre microbrewery project in Western Australia that took home the coveted National Building Design of the Year award.

Designed by local firm d4 Designs, Northbridge Brewing Company was also awarded the ‘Best New/Alteration/Addition Commercial Design’ and the ‘Best New/Alteration/Addition Industrial Design’ prize and was recognised by the NABD for complementing the bustling activity of Northbridge Piazza, and its celebration of the art of beer brewing within the fabric of the building.

“The open air bar brings a refreshing and sophisticated element, creating a relaxed and welcoming space for local Northbridge residents and interstate travellers,” says Steven Claridge, Chair of the Judging Panel.

“Visually, the venue responds perfectly and respectfully to the site, giving the interior a robust industrial aesthetic with superb interplay between form, function and the patrons.”

The architecture of Northbridge Brewing Company celebrates the art of beer brewing most overtly by showcasing the facility’s wort kettles within the two glass towers incorporated within street front façade.

Patrons are also invited into the brewing process quite literally. The micro-brewery is completely uncovered and situated at the entrance to the venue so visitors physically walk through all of its kettles, pipes, taps and primary kegs before making their way to the bar.

Director of d4 Designers, Douglas Paton, explains that his firm’s choice of materials, such as glass, steel copper, raw concrete and recycled bricks, take their cue from the site’s industrial history.

“Our objective was to incorporate the natural surroundings of the brewery and provide a relaxed backdrop for the public to explore,” says Paton.

“This is an impressive and bold design, and we’re proud to have been part of a project that will give a great deal back to the local Northbridge community.”

The Northbridge Brewing Company was placed first ahead of an impressive number of projects from Queensland, Victorian and Western Australian building designers that were announced as winners and commendations on the night.
