WOODHEAD has won the Green Leadership award in the Interior Architecture category in the BCI Green Design Award 2010 competition. Woodhead entered the Fujitsu Office in Melbourne into the Asian award, which seeks out innovative and environmentally responsible architecture that has been designed, built and commissioned in Asia.

The jury looked at how environmental strategies, systems and technologies are integrated in an imaginative manner, resulting in a user-centric architecture that is both functional and a delight to the senses. The submission must address form, space and activity in a manner that is both innovative and appropriate for brief, site and climate.

The Fujitsu offices in Melbourne received the highest 6 Star Green Star rating awarded to date. This new office fit out and workplace has not only contributed to the development of sustainable office design but also provides a corporate bench mark for the design of Fujitu’s future global workplace.

It is located in The Gauge, a Green Star accredited building at Melbourne’s Docklands. Woodhead regional principal, Gary Beer said “The sustainable solutions within the fit-out and the building have provided a noticeable difference to the air quality, a fresh, light environment which will contribute to the well being of Fujitsu staff”.

Working together with Fujitsu, Woodhead’s team, alongside Umow Lai Engineers and Schiavello, developed interior design and to suit the architectural features of the building. “Fujitsu engaged with Woodhead to further enhance our commitment to sustainability as we aim to embrace energy efficiency through all that we do,” states Greg Fawcett, general manager facilities, Fujitsu Australia.

All of the floors in the new fitout have been planned so that general staff are situated at the perimeter of the space, where daylight and views are prominent. The carefully planned internal shared spaces complement the exposed structure of the building as well as the day to day working environment of its users.

Spatial planning has resulted in the necessary departmental affiliations with level four as typical office space, level five as a conference floor and reception on level six. The sixth level reception features Fujitsu’s infinity logo embossed into a curved timber wall, with interactive LCD screens used as a promotional tool upon entering the space.

The digital media centre adjacent to reception, showcases the company’s new technologies in a darkened gallery space, complete with motion sensors to enhance the experience of what is on display. This dynamic corporate waiting area also features a striking bio-wall, a representation of Fujitsu’s environmental commitment.
