Frog’s Dream, Reburbia, Calvin Chiu

This is the winning design in the Reburbia competition, which tackled the question of what to do with all those abandoned McMansions. Frog’s Dream proposes to transform vacant McMansions into eco-water treatment machines in which a micro-ecosystem of plants, algae, bacteria, fish and clams exists to purify the water.

Around these houses, a wetland ecosystem would be created forming a home for larger wetland animals and plants.

What’s more, the project involves transforming motorways into multi-purpose infrastructure supporting cars, trains and bikes, as well as transporting water between the city and surrounding suburban wetlands.

The Reburbia design competition was run by Dwell, Inhabitat and Re-burbia, with all winners showcased on the publications’ websites.
