Architecture & Design's sister publication BPN Magazine has announced the sustainable building design experts who will judge the BPN Sustainability Awards 2012.
Now in its sixth year, the Sustainability Awards recognises the pinnacle of sustainable building practice in Australia.
Judges will include Dick Clarke, director of sustainable building consultancy Envirotecture; Jane Toner from ESD consultancy Sustainable Built Environments and Kerryn Wilmot from the University of Technology, Sydney's (UTS) Institute for Sustainable Futures.
The jury will select the projects and products from across Australia which demonstrate the highest levels of excellence in environmentally sustainable design and build.
Each juror brings a wealth of experience in working toward a sustainable built environment.
Jane Toner
Jane Toner is a senior associate at the pioneering Sustainable Built Environments (SBE), one of the first integrated teams in Australia to offer ESD consulting advice.
A registered architect, Toner has a strong ability to assess and identify ESD opportunities in a broad range of building types.
Since joining SBE in 2003, she has provided innovative and practical ESD advice for leisure and aquatic centres, residential projects, ecotourism, hotels, offices, healthcare and retail. She has also contributed to developing ESD guidelines, such as the DEH ESD Operations Guide. J
Toner has provided ESD advice for tourism projects across Australia and South East Asia. Her expertise in ecotourism guided the project team for Alila Villas Uluwatu Resort in Bali to achieve the first Green Globe 21 Design and Construct Certification in Indonesia.
Dick Clarke
Dick Clarke is principal of Envirotecture and an accredited building designer with 35 years experience, focusing exclusively on ecologically sustainable and culturally appropriate buildings. A multi-award winning designer, he holds a Master of Sustainable Futures degree by research (from the Institute for Sustainable Futures, UTS), having pursued the topic of the effect of state and local planning instruments on the sustainability of the built environment.
Clarke is Sustainability Director of Building Designers Australia, and past President of the Association of Building Sustainability Assessors (ABSA). He is involved with various government and non-government bodies on environmental issues and the built environment. He is currently involved in writing and editing the 5th Edition of the widely acclaimed Your Home Technical Manual, and previously sat on the NatHERS AccuRate Technical Advisory Committee, and the BASIX Industry Reference Group.
Clarke is an ACF Climate Change Volunteer presenter of Australia's Inconvenient Truth, having trained with Al Gore in November of 2006.
Kerryn Wilmot
Kerryn Wilmot is a highly experienced architect and sustainability professional with particular expertise in the built environment. She joined the Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF) as a Research Principal in June 2012. She has a practical understanding of construction processes and running multi-disciplinary teams from working extensively on the delivery of complex design projects in a 30-year career as a consultant architect.
Formerly an Associate at Spowers Architects, Wilmot was the project leader for the industry-leading 60L Green Building in Carlton, Victoria that won a Banksia Award and influenced today's commercial buildings and sustainable development tools. At Spowers and later at Williams Boag Architects, Wilmot specialised in sustainable development and advised on enhancing project sustainability and audited project environmental credentials. She contributed industry knowledge to the Williams Boag Research software tool that quickly assesses the financial feasibility of a sustainable development project at its inception, developed under an ARC Linkage grant. She has led two design projects in China with energy efficiency and sustainability agendas.
Wilmot has also been a casual lecturer at several universities and tutored in Sustainable Buildings and Environmental Building Services.
The Awards winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Sydney on 8 November with the results published in the December edition of the magazine.
