Just in time for the end of year festivities, Bates Smart has had a change at the top end of its business with three leadership promotions, which are designed, it says, to expand the firm’s capabilities with its ongoing industry relationships.

Joining Bates Smart in 2009 after returning from London where he worked as an architect for seven years, Matthew Allen has been promoted to director, where his role will be one of leadership, and a focal point between the ever-growing nexus of design and technology. At the same time, his portfolio includes award-winning projects across residential, student housing, civic, hotel and the mixed-use sectors.

Working across a broad range of projects in the commercial, residential, hospitality, education and transport fields in both the UK and Australia, Julian Anderson has also been promoted into the role of director. His remit will be in leading complex project teams to deliver what Bates Smart terms as being “innovative solutions.”

Last but certainly not least, Mathieu Le Sueur is the new studio director. According to a statement from the firm, Le Sueur ’s design work has resulted in some of Bates Smart’s “most progressive residential and commercial high-rise projects and competition wins,” and includes the Opal Tower at Sydney Olympic Park and the high-rise scheme for 8 Parramatta Square.
