The 2014 Glenn Murcutt Architecture Master Class will take place in July, with only 32 spots open to architects seeking to study under Pritzker Architecture Prize winner and Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist, Glenn Murcutt.

Founded in 2001, the intensive two-week design studio program involves a design project undertaken in groups, and culminating, at the end of week two, with a design presentation by participants subject to critique by Glenn Murcutt and other tutors.

These other tutors include Australian architects Brit Andresen and Richard Leplastrier, both AIA Gold Medallists, Peter Stutchbury and master class convener and former Dean of Architecture at the University of Newcastle, Lindsay Johnston.

The first week will be held at ‘Riversdale’, the Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre on the Shoalhaven River, south of Sydney.

Described as Murcutt’s ‘Master Work’, the building is situated between a eucalypt forest and cultivated farming land, and will be home to the participants, Murcutt and tutors during the program.

The second week will be held in a heritage building in Sydney.

Subject to confirmation, the program will include excursions with Murcutt to see houses such as the Simpson-Lee House at Mt. Wilson in the Blue Mountains. There will also be visits to see houses designed by Leplastrier and Stutchbury, although details are yet to be finalised and dependent on client consent to gain access to these properties.

The studio program, together with associated lectures and supporting events, equate to 150 hours of high-level study at a postgraduate level.

Past participants from around the world have found the Master Class to be an “invaluable opportunity to find mentorship and fraternity”.

The spirit of the event is that participation is the focus, and there is no formal assessment. A certificate of satisfactory completion will be issued to all participants completing the program.

Professional institutes and universities internationally have, over the years, accepted this event as gaining professional development or academic credit points.

As only 32 places are available internationally, applications will be assessed on credentials and merit, with preference given to early applicants. Both architects and senior students have made the program since its inception.
