The Australian Institute of Architects’ NSW Chapter has taken steps to protect the long-term future of the State’s most significant buildings.

The Institute’s NSW President Matthew Pullinger announced that they had renamed the Register of 20th century Buildings of Significance as The Australian Institute of Architects Register of Significant Architecture, “recognising we have left the 20th century”.

“Additionally, we will list, on the Register, all buildings that are awarded the Sulman Medal and our top awards for residential and commercial architecture,” he said.

“We will also advocate for the listing of Institute awarded buildings on local government heritage schedules.

“Buildings that win both the Sulman Medal and our Enduring Architecture Award will be eligible for nomination by the Institute to the State Heritage Register.

“The aim of this policy is to protect recognised examples of design excellence in buildings and their contribution to the quality of our built environment, as well as protecting their integrity throughout their life”, Pullinger said.

“The Institute recognises that buildings need to adapt to the changing needs of their owners. The Institute will support changes that respect the design integrity and quality of the original buildings.

“The moral rights of living architects are recognised in the Copyright Act. The promotion of award-winning buildings through listings will provide further support for their designers, who should be given the opportunity to comment on changes to their buildings proposed by other designers or architects’.

The Institute’s Register lists more than 3,000 buildings by NSW architects.
