A 2016 Sustainability Awards finalist has been named National Building Design of the Year at the National Building Design Awards.

Designed by Green Sheep Collective, Alphington Townhouses is a collection of four townhouses in the Melbourne suburb of Alphington. Each dwelling features spaces that allow for flexibility and the varied lifestyles of inhabitants.

The project also addresses the impact of vehicular access and parking, which often dominates developments. By minimising this, the townhouses are awarded with increased landscaping on the street, additional backyard areas, and the creation of internal courtyards.

As well as taking out the top honour at last night’s award ceremony, Alphington Townhouses won the Best ‘Multi-Residential Design – Up To 6 Dwellings’ category.

Other notable projects recognised at the awards included The Guildford Hotel by Fratelle Group and Joan 7.3 by Bios. Both projects took home three accolades.

Hosted by the National Association of Building Designers (NABD), the awards were established in 2013 to promote and develop the building design industry and the work of its professionals. It brings together the State Building Designers Associations of Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

Instead of a traditional awards ceremony, this year’s event was a live presentation at several Brickworks Design Studios around Australia (in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide).
