The SPUN Awards which aim to recognise small practice architects in New South Wales have announced a wide range of winners for 2012.

Matt Elkan Architecture won a Grand award in the category of residential new build for the Lagoon House in Narrabeen.

The house has incorporated passive solar heating, natural ventilation and has been designed to maximise light.

The jury citation said that the house had achieved a successful relationship with the historic and urban context of a beach house.

"There is a deliberate paring back of the finishes to the absolute integral without any need for unnecessary detail."

The other Grand Award was presented to Robert Jones Architects in the category of residential alterations and additions for a house at Palm Beach. The house is orientated to receive natural ventilation and solar access with recycled and salvaged materials used throughout.

The jury commented:

"The finished project is uncluttered, sustainable and environmentally pleasing to the eye, and, most importantly, exceedingly able to fulfil the needs of a family’s hearth and home."

SPUN, which stands for ‘Small Practices Upper North’ is a network established with the Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter. The networks are gatherings of local architects who meet regularly to discuss current ideas and issues affecting aspects of architectural practice.
