The Sydney
Opera House is being made into an official Lego product, joining a select few
architectural icons recreated in miniature architecture collection.
The Opera House is one of seven brick-built models in the
new architecture range, which will also include New York's Empire State
Building and Seattle's Space Needle. It’s due to be released in March.
Of course people have been making their versions of the
iconic building with the famous toy for many years, although it is often cited
as one of the most challenging of buildings to replicated in Lego.
The new official model builds the Australian landmark in
miniature using 260 Lego pieces.
Pritzker Prize-winning Danish architect Jorn Utzon’s Sydney
building joins models of other celebrated buildings by architects including Farnsworth
House by Mies van der Rohe, the Burj Khalifa by SOM and three projects by Frank
Lloyd Wright: Fallingwater, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Robie House.
The Lego Architecture range was launched in 2010 by the
Danish toy brand to “celebrate the past, present and future of architecture
through the medium of the Lego Brick”.
Lego Australia director of marketing Caroline Squire said:
“The Lego Architecture Sydney Opera House seeks to capture the essence of this
grand building in a small scale.
“The Lego Architecture range uses the iconic Lego brick to
interpret the designs of renowned architecture from around the world and Lego
Australia is proud that Australia’s own Sydney Opera House has been chosen as
one of the 2012 debut models for this exciting collection.”
