Trimble has released SketchUp 2014, the latest version of its 3D modelling platform for architects, designers, engineers and construction professionals.

SketchUp 2014 features a newly rebuilt 3D warehouse which will make it easier for users to organise content and find models.

According to SketchUp, every model on the new 3D Warehouse now works with its integrated WebGL viewer. This means that users can preview the models in full 3D before downloading them into their own projects.

3D models can even be embedded on other web pages so visitors can explore projects using SketchUp’s standard navigation tools or their own pre-set scenes.

Notably, the maximum size for uploadable models has increased from 10 to 50 megabtyes.

However, the key change for the popular illustrative tool is its integration into the world of Business Information Modelling (BIM) via three new features that are specific to information modelling:

  • Classifier tool tags that enrich models with important metadata, allowing users to classify objects with existing classification systems, or a customised system to suit their needs.
  • Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) export function, which allows users to wrap up a project for use in another BIM application after its objects have been classified. Along with the model geometry, users will have access to all metadata added in SketchUp Pro.
  • Ruby 2.0: The Ruby programming language is the syntax making the universe of SketchUp extensions possible. In the 2014 SketchUp release, the firm has brought its API up to Ruby 2.0 standards, giving developers a fresh platform for creating new SketchUp tools.

“BIM workflows are often complex and rigid processes, and we believe they don’t need to be,” said John Bacus, director of SketchUp product management at Trimble.

“With this new release, we are enabling users to participate more effectively at any point in the information modelling process. We’ve added simple tools for adding structured information to a model in a way that is helpful to SketchUp customers, allowing them to easily pass information to others on their project teams, regardless of the tools being used.”

Professional users will also benefit from continued enhancements to the 2D documentation capabilities in SketchUp Pro 2014, such as auto tags to improve accuracy and reduce repetitive work, smart labels with pre-populated relevant text, and significant improvements in speed for vector-rendered model views.
