A film of leading architecture practices, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry and Dominique Perrault in an international design competition will be screened as part of the Open House Melbourne program from Saturday, 26 July 2014.

Some of Melbourne’s best-known architects will then come together for a public debate on the role and relevance of architectural design competitions on 30 July.

DIS-cour.se will present the Australian premiere of The Competition, in partnership with Open House Melbourne, Melbourne School of Design and ACMI Cinemas.

The Competition is a film, directed by Spanish Architect, Angel Borrego Cubero. It presents a raw account of leading architecture practices, Zaha Hadid, Norman Foster, Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry and Dominique Perrault, involved in an international design competition for the National Museum of Andorra.

The Melbourne School of Design website explains a panel discussion will follow the Saturday night screening, giving the audience an opportunity to delve further into the concept of the architectural design competition and the film itself. The panel will feature Angel Borrego Cubero alongside local experts.

“MSD alumni, Linus Gruszewski and James Carter, who set up DIS-cour.se to promote more critical engagement on architecture in Melbourne, are responsible for bringing The Competition to Australia for the first time and are eager to open up the debate on architecture competitions, which have become so central in industry,” the publicity states.
