2014 MPavilion opens in Melbourne

MPavilion is collaborating with global cultural organisations to develop free public programs on design and architecture for the upcoming event in October.

Offering a strong design and architecture focus, the first wave of free public programs was recently unveiled by MPavilion and the Naomi Milgrom Foundation to be presented as part of MPavilion 2015, designed by AL_A, the studio of British architect Amanda Levete.

MPavilion has partnered with cultural organisations from around the world including the Melbourne Festival, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Google’s Creative Lab and the London Design Festival to deliver the 2015 public program, which will be presented from 5 October 2015 until 7 February 2016 in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens.

The free programs will see the return of MTalks, MMeets, MMusic, films and gatherings exploring architecture, landscape and design.

MTalks

The opening week will feature a free public ‘in conversation’ MTalks event with MPavilion creator Naomi Milgrom AO, MPavilion 2015 architect Amanda Levete and Victoria and Albert Museum Director Martin Roth. Presented at MPavilion on Tuesday 6 October at 6:15pm the trio will discuss the commissioning of innovative contemporary cultural spaces, following Martin Roth’s official unveiling of the MPavilion 2015 on Monday 5 October.

Collaborations

MPavilion 2015 will also see design collaborations with designers such as Paul Bangay (landscape designer), Speak Percussion’s composer Matthias Schack-Arnott (sound design), lighting designer Ben Cobham, Kloke fashion designers Amy and Adam Coombes, and graphic designer Fabio Ongarato.

MPavilion has undertaken two major design collaborations with the Melbourne Festival and ACMI to create a number of programs.

MPavilion coincides with two extraordinary design and style exhibitions being presented at ACMI: David Bowie Is… from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and the world-premiere of ACMI-curated, Orry-Kelly: Dressing Hollywood. In celebration of design, ACMI and MPavilion will co-present an evening with Martin Roth on 7 October at ACMI.

Other partnered events include the new documentary celebrating acclaimed architect and furniture designer, Eileen Gray titled Gray Matters (9-27 October); and the screening of Serpentine Pavilion’s Marathon event (18 October).

MPavilion will be the design hub for the 2015 Melbourne Festival from Thursday 8 October until Sunday 25 October. Festival Director, Josephine Ridge has devised a program of free Festival events that respond to the architecture of MPavilion.

A series of lunchtime events at the MPavilion will include performances by harpist Marshall McGuire, mezzo-soprano Eurudike De Beul, virtuoso guitarist Mauricio Carrasco, spoken word poetry and book readings.

Ben Evans, Director of the London Design Festival will launch a new digital design initiative for Melbourne called 25XDesign at 12 noon on Wednesday 7 October. Created in collaboration with London Design Festival with the help of Google's Creative Lab, 25XDesign asks Amanda Levete to select her 25 design inspirations from around Melbourne, which will be virtually displayed in 360 degrees.

MMeets

MPavilion’s MMeets series of free gatherings returns in 2015, inviting participants to explore the world through the designer’s eye. Running from October 2015 until February 2016, MMeets allows participants to explore design and creativity through unexpected activities.

On Tuesday 13 October at 6:15pm, MPavilion will host a discussion about Women Transforming the City and the role of a female sensibility in design. Presented by Parlour, a group dedicated to promoting research, informed opinion and resources on women, equity and architecture in Australia, the talk coincides with presentation of the documentary Gray Matters about design legend Eileen Gray at ACMI.

Melbourne based Artist Film Workshop presents Cityscapes in Experimental Cinema, a selection of 16mm experimental films focused on urban environments on Tuesday 27 October at 8pm.

This Public Life: 2015 Landscape Architecture Conference runs from Thursday 15 October to Sunday 18 October in Melbourne. MPavilion will host a series of talks and landscape design tours presented in partnership with This Public Life and Tract Consultants.

MPavilion will be open to the public from 5 October 2015 until 7 February 2016. Entry to MPavilion will be free and all programmed events presented at MPavilion are free.
