Young international designers are invited to focus their design skills on Venice for the Lighthouse Competition 2012/2013 / Città immaginarie.

Artemide is promoting the competition within the framework of a set of initiatives organised by the company across Europe to help train the designers of the future.

The heart of the competition is Venice and, particularly, the two “gates” through which the over 20 million visitors access the city every year – Piazzale Roma ad the near-by Santa Lucia railway station.

The main language to participate to the competition, which takes place within the framework of the Biennial Architecture exhibition, is light as an immaterial and innovative vehicle to describe the transition from the mainland to the water.

The Competition encourages the participants to view the city as a stage, where light becomes a medium linking man to architecture and urban voids/spaces, which are turned into locations. A sustainable light capable to stimulate new consciousness, identities, and environmental qualities, while establishing connections and keeping the pace with man and nature.

“We are asking students of architecture, interior architecture, scenography, and landscape design to give shape to the entrance and to transition, with its undefined quid,” says Ernesto Gismondi, Founder and President of Artemide.

“We expect that the participants to the Competition provide ideas for a temporary and subversive intervention, reviewing the existing architecture or implementing integrating constructions.”

The Competition, due to close in mid-March 2013, was launched by Ernesto Gismondi on September 14 last in Venice at the Symposiuon “Urban Scenography”.

Speakers at the event included Carlotta de Bevilacqua, architect and teacher, who developed important studies on light for Artemide and promoted the rebirth and renewed success of Danese, an historical made-in-Italy brand.
