A plant filled bathroom designed by British architect Kim Wilkie has been declared the winner of a contest searching for the 'Best Restroom in America'.

Sponsored by bathroom supply company, Cintas, the competition asked people to vote online for their favourite US washroom facility.

10 nominees were in the running for the title, but it was the lush bathrooms located at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania that gained the most attention from voters.

The winning bathroom is built inside a greenhouse at the public gardens and consists of 17 domed lavatories that are naturally lit through etched translucent glass skylights.

Access to each toilet is through individual doors positioned along a curvy green-wall, which is covered in over 50,000 plants.

The vertical garden is one of the largest indoor green walls in North America and was installed in the bathroom to help clean dust and toxins from the air.

According to Longwood Garden’s Communications Manager, the bathrooms have become a “must-see” for visitors to the gardens and there are even guides available to share information about the facility’s design.
