RMIT University is presenting leading architect and Grand Designs Australia host Peter Maddison with its highest honour at the upcoming Graduation Ceremony to be held at Docklands Stadium on 17 December.

An RMIT architecture graduate, Maddison will receive a Doctor of Design Honoris Causa in recognition of his career as an architect, television host and ambassador for sustainability.

Maddison established his own company, Maddison Architects in 1989, which has since gone on to win numerous commercial and residential awards for its contribution to shaping Melbourne’s skyline and streetscape.

According to RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Gill Palmer, some of Maddison Architects’ works include The Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership in North Melbourne, Transport Hotel complex at Federation Square, Eureka Tower Sky Deck at Southgate, The Cloud Canopy at Federation Square Plaza(pictured below) and Cabin 2 (pictured bottom).

Maddison expanded his horizons in 2010 by becoming the host of Grand Designs Australia, an Australian version of the popular long-running British series. The Australian series has won a number of awards and is shown internationally.

A valued member and Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, Maddison is ambassador to programs such as Open House Melbourne, where he connects people to design by explaining architectural concepts in simple terms. He has also contributed to local and state government forums on sustainability such as Future Proofing Geelong, and has been a part of the Planet Ark ‘Make It Wood – Do Your World Some Good’ campaign.

He is a key supporter of the Kids Under Cover charity.

Palmer adds that Maddison’s career embodies the RMIT story and values, reflected in his professional focus on urban sustainability, his global presence via Grand Designs Australia, and his attitude to urban design and sustainable design practice.
