The city of Zhuhai, China, has chosen an aquatic inspired building by Scottish architecture firm RMJM as the winner of a competition to design a new landmark tower.
Set to be built at the intersection of two rivers in the Chinese Riviera, RMJM’s Doumen Observation Tower was designed to mimic the movement of water and aquatic life in the coastal city.
The 93-metre tower references the shape of a jumping fish through its curving form and features a “scaly” façade made up of 1,400 bent and perforated aluminium panels.
The arrangement of the panels also helps to shade the interior from direct sunlight.
RMJM used a parametric modelling system to develop the tower’s shape, which is made up of twelve two-dimensional curves.
The structure is divided up into three sections – a ground-level podium housing shops and restaurants, a middle section containing leisure facilities, and a top-floor observation deck offering 360-degree views.
