Dutch company Energiesprond (Energy Leap) has come up with a retrofit initiative to make houses carbon neutral using innovative insulation that snaps on like Lego.

The entire retrofit process is said to take about 10 days and involves completely wrapping houses with insulated, snap-on facades and capping them with insulated roofs adorned with 24 high-efficiency solar panels.

In addition, heat pumps, hot water tanks, and ventilation units are stalled in a garden shed.

Energiesprond has already won a contract from the Dutch government, enabling them to retrofit 111,000 Netherlands homes on estates mostly built in the 1960s and 70s.

As an incentive to get whole housing blocks on board with the program, tenants were also offered free Ikea kitchens and bathrooms.

According to the Guardian UK, Energiesprond is now bidding for $12.8 million from the EU’s Horizon 2020 fund so that it can extend the project to the UK and France.
