Brisbane Airport’s (BNE) International Terminal is set to undergo a $45 million redevelopment, with Brisbane practices Richards and Spence and Arkhefield leading the transformation.

Brisbane Airport Corporation's (BAC) CEO and managing director Julieanne Alroe says the investment will transform the terminal to feature a more distinctly Brisbane design.

“Most airport terminals are alike, no matter where you are in the world. Few have a real sense of the destination and community they serve. Brisbane is about to break that mould and set a new world-best standard for terminal design,” says Alroe.

“We wanted the International Terminal to feel like it couldn’t be anywhere other than Brisbane, so it was important for us to engage local expertise in Richards and Spence and Arkhefield because they understand Brisbane and have been responsible for developing a new and very contemporary take on the Queensland architectural style.”

Richards and Spence was established in 2008, and specialises in retail, restaurant and commercial developments. Examples of its work include the 19 James Street retail precinct, and the laneway refurbishments in Brisbane’s CBD.

Arkhefield has also delivered notable retail, commercial and public architecture, including The Barracks, River Quay and Stokehouse in Southbank, as well as Cairn’s and Townsville’s Cruise Port Terminals.

The renovations will reinvigorate arrival and departure areas, as well as expand retail space.

BAC will also increase its collection of public art at both terminals and within the Skygate precinct. Queensland artists Sally Gabori and Sebastian Moody have been commissioned to be a part of this creative process.

The project has been in the works for the past two and a half years, with this redevelopment to be the most significant overhaul the facility has faced since opening in 1995.

Work will commence in February 2014 and is scheduled for completion in mid-2015.
