ASPECT Studios and Misho+Associates are busy preparing a Development Application for a new 16.5 hectare zoo for western Sydney, after potential developers received a lease grant for the government owned land.

The $36 million ‘Sydney Zoo’ would be located within the 216 hectare "Super Park" at Bungarribee on the Great Western Highway near the junction of the M7 and M4 motorways, and see design input from ASPECT Studios (landscape architecture and masterplanning), MISHO+Associates (architects for entry pavilion and resturaunt) and Off the Cuffe (exhibit design).

The plans include elevated walkways through an African grasslands exhibit, underwater glass viewing areas and reptile and nocturnal animal houses. The zoo will also run an animal breeding program for endangered species including Asian elephants, lowland gorillas and tigers.

Sydney Zoo would be entirely privately funded but the developer says that it is not his intention to compete with the not-for-profit Taronga Zoo, Sydney’s oldest Zoo, but to rather attract the expanding and untapped market of western Sydney families.

"Within half an hour of here there are 2.5 million people who can drive here with virtually no traffic lights. Seventy eight per cent of those are people in families and family groups," says John Burgess, managing director of Sydney Zoo and founder of Sydney Aquarium, in an interview with Fairfax Media.

A State Significant Development Application is currently being prepared and will be lodged with the state government and placed on public exhibition later this year.
